A diversified sign business with established clientele in Vernon, B.C. The screen printing capabilities allow for specialized real estate related signage and general business needs. Screen printed decals are widely used where durability is required. Screen printing can be done in wood, banner vinyl, steel, aluminium and a variety of plastics. Vinyl printing allows for window decals, specialty graphics, sign faces, portable signs, banners and vehicle graphics. Distribution for labels and promotional items as well. The three main areas of the business are graphics design, screen printing and vinyl and digital production.
House features
The company, because of its screen printing capabilities has specialized in products for the real estate market. We print and stock a variety of signs and decals that are available in our shop along with a full range of sign frames and stakes. We also print custom listing, open house, and directional signs on coroplast for real estate clients in the Okanagan and throughout British Columbia.
Other clients for screen printed signage include FSBO companies, developers and builders, security companies, the BC government and sign shops in more remote parts of BC for trade sales .
As well, there are clients for screen printing services that include companies that manufacture volleyball nets and truck tarps. Screen printed decals are produced for security companies and manufacturers where durability and/or impressions are required.
We also screen print on wood, banner vinyl, steel, aluminum, and a variety of plastics. Maximum imprint size is 36 inches. Smallest would be 6 pt print.
At this time, no other sign business in Vernon screen prints on rigid or semi rigid substrates. The closest screen printing shops are in Kelowna and Kamloops. None have specialized in real estate to the same extent.
Our vinyl cutting and digital printing capabilities also allow us to service the traditional local graphics market. We do commercial signage that includes window decals, specialty graphics, sign faces, portable signs, banners and vehicle graphics.
We're also able to produce digitally printed and cut decals to fill orders that come through our website's quote form.
The company is a distributor for labels and promotional items acquired from national producers.
Staff Responsibilities
The owners work full time in the business and there is one employee. Other employees are brought in as needed. Signage installation is generally provided on a contract basis .
There are three separate positions with areas of responsibilities:
One is primarily responsible for graphics design and sales. An understanding of graphic design principals and computer design is needed. The ability to manage a network , a 30 inch plotter/cutter and a 30 inch printer/cutter is a requirement. Ability with Email, MS operating systems, and file systems is necessary. Quoting and estimating are part of the responsibilities of this position.
The second (owner) provides screen printing and accounting. Screen printing skills involve using a darkroom to create the screens, selecting the correct inks for the substrate, and efficiently applying the ink through the stencil to efficiently create a sharp image. Quoting and estimating screen printing jobs are a requirement of this position.
The third staff member primarily takes care of vinyl and digital production, sign assembly and production assistance. Handling a computer operating system, a cutter/plotter and printer/cutter and computer design software is part of this position. A knowledge of the various materials is needed as well as the ability to work with the the materials and the appropriate tools.
All three staff work directly with clients and have a good knowledge of applicable graphic products to clients needs.
Facilities
The business is located at 2401 23rd Street in Vernon, British Columbia. It occupies approximately 1200 sq ft. The annual lease costs $1512.79 monthly. Electricity and gas are not included. Heat is provided by a gas furnace. The water heater (April 2009) is electric.
Facilities include a showroom, darkroom, screen print room, vinyl room, digital print area, wood work area and substrate storage.
Equipment
Includes a computer network with three computers, two desktop printers, a 30 inch vinyl cutter and a 30 inch digital printer/cutter. The screen print area has an exposure box and drying racks. The digital printer is leased.
The website provides samples of work, a quote request form and for realtors, downloadable order forms.
Operations
Technology is essential to the operations of the company. Three Email addresses and a website are used to communicate with clients and suppliers. Inquiries, quotes, orders, proofs and invoices are generally transmitted through Email.
The design process uses several computer programs to create designs, proofs for clients and production files for vinyl cutting or digital printing. Positives for screen printing are digitally printed or vinyl cut.
The vinyl cutter and the digital printer on dedicated PC's are networked to the design computer and the Internet. Cross backups of files between PC's provides production backup.
Screen printing is a hand craft process. Typical print runs are 20 signs in 2 colours for realtors, however 50 and 100 piece runs are possible. Other clients need runs of up to 500 pieces. We do outsource greater orders or prints that are too large for our facilities.
We maintain stock of realtors' supplies in our showroom. Those supplies include sign blanks, toppers, and decals for signs as well as sign frames and stakes. We provide 24 hour service on customized print stock.
Alpha has several suppliers for the materials required. The majority are located in the lower mainland. Frames come from an Ontario supplier.
Legal
The company name “alpha decals & signs“ is registered but not transferable due to conflict with another company name. The name will be modified to permit transfer to new owners.
